Offical Press Release of the Grimes County Fair Association
Date of Release: October 31, 2017
During an internal audit of the financial records and accounts of the Grimes County Fair Association, the Association's representatives became concerned about numerous questionable transactions. The Association conducted an extensive investigation into the transactions in question and consequently provided the information to the Grimes County Sheriff's Office for further investigation.
As a result of the Grimes County Fair Association investigation, it was uncovered that an officer had misused funds. The officer in question requested from the board numerous reimbursements written to him and his wife throughout the course of the past sixteen months. These reimbursement requests were all associated with normal transactions for the association and were accompanied by invoices, falsified receipts or other methods of manipulation to convince the board not to investigate any particular transaction at the time of reimbursement request. At the conclusion of the internal investigation the accused officer was confronted about the questionable transactions upon which the officer confessed to the Board of Officers of wrongdoing and misappropriation of funds. The Grimes County Fair Association, at this time, believes neither the accused officer's wife nor family had any knowledge of the wrongdoings taking place.
Upon future investigation by law enforcement, it was determined that the officer of the Fair Association had allegedly engaged in numerous fraudulent transactions which had been concealed from the Fair Association. The Association is committed to eliminating any further type of fradudulent conduct and will continue to expand financial protocols to prevent this from happening in the future.
The officer has resigned from the Grimes County Fair Association. The Grimes County Fair Association is confident that it has determined the amount of the Association's funds that are missing; however, it cannot release the specific details at this time due to the ongoing investigation and other ongoing legal matters.
The Grimes County Fair Association would like to assure everyone that this matter will not affect any payment to any exhibitor, whether it is in the form of scholarship or exhibitor check resulting from the sale of a fair project. The Association believes that the wrongdoing of one individual should not take anything away from the youth that are pouring hard work into their projects. The Association has also resolved issues pertaining to the Associations accounts payable.
All requests regarding the status of the investigation and this matter should be directed to the Grimes County Sheriff's Department. Investigator James Ellis 936-873-2151
